A cup is a volume measurement - usually liquid, but can be used for dry goods too. 8 oz of weight (which is how cheese is generally sold) isn’t going to translate to 8 fluid ounces, which is a cup. But, as someone pointed out, shredded cheese is usually about 4 ozs of weight to one cup.

Yes. People confuse fluid (volume) ounces with weight ounces all the time. 8 oz by weight of shredded cheese equals 2 cups (16 oz) by volume.

Not for shredded cheese. 4 oz = 1 cup, 8 oz = 2 cups.OP, I usually just take the ounces of cheese and grate it, without measuring out the finished grated cheese. No need to compact it, as I"m measuring by weight, not volume.
I loved teaching metric to kids. They have no idea how complex the system the learned (standard) really is! While I would love the ease of the metric system, I don"t think I"d love weighing things. I"m a girl who loves to scoop and toss.

Seems like a far more accurate way to make a recipe. Unlike the US where a cup of flour can range anywhere from 3/4 c to 1 1/4 cups depending on how much the cook packs the flour or fills the cup.

I have often thought that. Obviously in some recipes it doesn’t matter too much but for others it seems terribly hit or miss
