Hey there AA! Kdog back at it once again. I was debating whether or not I should’ve done this topic, but I thought I could make this kind of topic very interesting in a blog. So, here we go...

You are watching: Edward elric height at the end of brotherhood

You all out there should know Fullmetal Alchemist right? It’s one of if not the greatest anime ever created. But, I’m not here to talk about the anime itself, I’m here to talk about the anime’s main protagonist and the Fullmetal Alchemist himself, Edward Elric. You all know his personality; he’s sort of immature on the surface, but if you’ve made an impact on him, he shows his deeper nature to be selflessness, loyal, and compassionate. Although, this isn’t always the case; the main running gag of the show is when people call him “short,” “shorty,” “pipsqueak,” you get the picture. But, can we really call him by all those names just so he’d get quick-tempered? Well, let’s conduct some research on this and find out...

How tall is Edward?

The answer to this question is actually simpler than you think. According to the Fullmetal Alchemist Wiki on Fandom, at the beginning of the series, Edward stands at only 149 cm (4’11”), so he’s pretty small for his age. How tall is he at the end of his journey? That question’s not so clear cut. There are many assumptions of different heights for Edward at the end of the series. The anime doesn’t give us a clear answer so that means we got to take a look at the manga, and there is an answer.

Height Comparison of Fullmetal Alchemist characters.

In the volume 2 extras of the manga, Ed gets asked how tall he really was. He replied he was 165 cm (5’5”) tall. Unfortunately, this height included his elevator shoes & hair antenna, so he was really 141 cm (4’8”). By Chapter 84, he’s shown to be taller than Winry, implying that he has attained his 165 cm (5’6”) stature. So, we’ll imply for this research experiment that by the end of the series, Edward is 5’6”-5’7”.

Where is Edward Elric from & what real life country is his home based on?

In the world of Fullmetal Alchemist, Edward is from Resembool, a rural town in Southeastern Amestris. Now that we know he’s from Amestris, which is a fictional country, what real world country resembles Amestris the most? Amestris takes influences from many European countries & cultures as proved by the #Production" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener">FMA Wiki:

”When creating the fictional world of Fullmetal Alchemist, Arakawa was inspired after reading about Europe during the Industrial Revolution period; she was amazed by how different the people from different countries were, in terms of their culture, architecture, and clothes. She was especially interested in England during this period and "added to it her own original flavor to turn it into a fantasy world".”

So we know that this series is based on Europe. But which country? Thankfully, the first feature-length FMA film known as “Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa,” gives us an answer. First off, we already know this film is canon as it serves as the conclusion to the 2003 anime series. Secondly, the film takes place in 1923 Germany during the Weimar Republic Era. Amestris has many similarities to Nazi Germany. They are both ruled by a dictator and have similar enemies: the Nazi nation had Russia while Amestris had Drachma. The German Empire (1871-1918) had a population of 56 million in 1900, close to the time period of Fullmetal Alchemist itself. We’ll keep it at that: this show is loosely based on Nazi Germany.

Can we really call Edward “short?”

Now that we know Ed’s height and which real world country this anime’s based on, on to the main event: Can we really call Edward “short?” Because the show doesn’t take place during today’s century, we’ll have to look at the average height of German males in the 1920s. To do this, a little research is involved.

At first, I wasn’t getting much luck just by simply typing in “Average of height of males in Germany in 1920,” on Google, so I gotta think a little more outside the box. And my method for finding the average height of a German during the beginning of Nazi Germany involves two steps:

1.) Find the average height of German males in the modern day.

2.) Look up height trends throughout the past century.

Finding the average height of German males in the modern day was pretty simple. According to a German article on a website known as “Laenderdaten.info,” which translates from German as “Countries Data.info” the average height for a man in Germany today is 180 cm (5’11”) tall, as shown in this table here:

Now that we know that information, we need to look at trends from the past century. Thankfully, on the same article where we got our table, under the “Historical increase in size” section, when translated into English, states:

”Almost in all countries of the world, the average body height has increased significantly in the last 100 years. While German men at the beginning of the 20th Century were still about 13 cm smaller, Spanish men have gained over 14 cm and Iranians even over 16 cm...”

Given this statement and information we found, we can determine the average height of a German male in 1900 to be 167 cm (around 5’6”-5’7”) tall. If you’re assuming that average height can change in males between 1900 & 1917 (when Edward was 18 years old in the manga), the change in height would be very minimal and has no value when added to our research.

Final Verdict

Now that I’ve completed my research, I’m now ready to give you all my final answer. Can we really call Edward “shorty?” If he’s an adult like how he is at the end of the series, then no as he would be the average height for a male German in the 20th Century. Although, if you wanna call 15-16 year old Ed short, then your answer is yes as he was only 4’11” tall when starting out. So I guess your answer depends on Edward’s age. If it’s teenager Ed, go right ahead. If it’s adult Ed, then probably not, otherwise, you might get a punch in the face from the former Fullmetal Alchemist.
